In order to have a successful business, you must be able to be successful in sales. For a team of Penn State students from the ProSales Club, participating in the National Shores Sales Challenge in Salisbury, Maryland spring 23’, it was an opportunity to compete against other business students from across the country. As their faculty advisors, Dr. Darrell Bartholomew and Dr. Stephen Hampton, guided the students to perform the best they could in the challenge. Although the students did not win the competition, they did gain a valuable experience on sales and how it is applied in the real world by speaking with trained judges and hearing feedback on how to improve their selling skills.
Our Club President, Brody Arnick said, “The event was a great way to build professional connections and allow our students to build sales and compete with bigger schools due to the quality of students we have.” He also says, “Through our leadership and advisors, Penn State Harrisburg will soon grow to be a recognizable university and the ProSales Club we become a respectable organization that competes hard against top tier schools. Brody is very proud of the club members and the direction the club is headed in the future.
According to our role play competitor, Francesca Mbibouth Junior at Penn State Harrisburg, the competition was very interesting, impressed by her peers, and had a great time networking with the companies and other schools. She was very nervous at first but she soon became comfortable after competing in the first round. This was Francesca’s first trip with the ProSales Club as well competing in a sales challenge. One thing that Francesca learned from the trip to get out of your head and just be confident when speaking to buyers during the selling process. She also connected with two companies and hopes to obtain a future position with them. Her advice for people that want to compete in the future is that even if you are not particularly in sales or marketing, you should still learn the sales process to help you succeed in your career. She is glad she got experience a new perspective outside of her study of Health Policy Administration and a minor in Biology. She hopes to graduate with this degree in 2024 and believes the club is a great resource for learning and networking through the business industry.
According to our other role play competitor, Yousef Hamed Senior at Penn State Harrisburg, the competition was a great opportunity to learn about sales and the selling process as well as networking with other students and companies. It was Yousef’s first ever competition and he said it was a humbling experience for him. Yousef had some history in sales as he was car salesman for Blue Whale Auto in Harrisburg, PA. One thing he learned from the trip was that “If you do not make it to the top you should never give up and always keep trying.” he said. Yousef also made connections from the trip not only from the other schools there but also with United Rentals, Orkin, and Memory Blue. He hopes that he could find a future position with any of the companies that he networked with. Yousef also gave some advice, “When it comes to the sales competition stick to the agenda the university and challenge provides try to memorize as much knowledge as possible.” He was glad he competed in the event because it allowed him to bond with the club as well as meeting interesting students from the different universities that also attended. Mr. Hamed hopes to graduate in the Fall 2023, with a degree in Management and will pursue his Master’s specializing in Business Analytics.
Kudos to the entire ProSales Club Team and Role Play Competitors! Continue increasing your sales prowess and knowledge to be a top contender in future competitions. Appreciation & congrats to the two PSU Faculty Advisors for the guidance and providing the annual opportunity for the students to compete!
